The late Peter P. Blanchard III, Founding Chairman of Greenwood Gardens, was a naturalist, conservationist, historian, artist, and writer. Named in his memory, this series endeavors to enlighten registrants on the many topics of interest and importance to him.

The Art, History, and Restoration of Scenic Wallpaper

Against the backdrop of Greenwood Gardens’ Zuber wallpaper masterpiece, “Views of Switzerland,” the co-owners of Scenic Wallpaper, a 30-year-old company specializing in the installation and preservation of the world’s finest new and antique hand-blocked scenic wallpapers, will present a fascinating talk on this art form’s artistry and history, as well as insight into how these stunning papers are produced and restored.

The Artist in Residence: Interpreting a Multi-layered Garden Oasis

With Pat Brentano, Artist and Environmentalist

From preliminary black and white photos and pencil drawings for composition, to small watercolors establishing her color palette, to larger finished paintings, accomplished artist Pat Brentano will share the process she undertook to interpret the complex synergy between nature, architecture, and the antique garden ornaments found throughout Greenwood’s historic site. Her stunning two dimensional paintings bring nature alive on her canvases. Enjoy iced tea and cookies following the presentation while lingering over an exhibit of Pat’s completed work.

While discussions about Short Hills have primarily focused on Stewart Hartshorn and his suburban ideals, the broader history of the town has been largely overlooked. Join our local expert for an illuminating exploration of Old Short Hills, which examines the strategic significance of the area during the Revolutionary Period, its role as a site for burgeoning industry, and its transformation into a coveted residential locale that attracted notable individuals, including Edward Renwick, John Taylor, and Joseph P. Day, early owner of the property known today as Greenwood Gardens.

Hawk Migration Over the Watchungs

With Wayne Quinto, Conservationist and Award-Winning Nature Photographer

September is an ideal time to observe migrating hawks, eagles and falcons passing close to home over the First Watchung Mountain and Greenwood Gardens on their way south for the winter. This presentation will explain the migration of these majestic avian friends and why New Jersey is an ideal vantage-point for viewing this annual pageant, as well as providing some basic skills to help identify what you see. We’ll be taking a walk in the garden, so please wear comfortable shoes.

The Forgotten Victory Trail

With Bob Gula, VP/Education Officer for both the Sons of the American Revolution (West Fields Chapter) and the Forgotten Victory Trail Association

Join us for a fascinating lecture about our local area’s role fighting in the Revolutionary War. Noted Short Hills expert, Bob Gula, will provide insight into the significant battles that were fought in our own backyards including the Battles of Springfield, Connecticut Farms, and Elizabethtown. To enhance your experience, Bob will deliver his presentation dressed in full period uniform of a New Jersey Militia Private.
